  1. 2007 was a great year, as any of your top five would be in consideration for my best of the decade as well.

The one thing all of you top 20 posts are showing me is that I have a ton of stuff I missed during this decade that I need to go watch, post-haste. Your years of Blockbuster obviously prepared you well.

  2. I agree this was a very solid year for films. I would rank ZODIAC #1 on my list as well. Talk about a great film with an incredible cast and a completely riveting story. I think that this may be David Fincher's best film to date.

I also liked your inclusion of 28 WEEKS LATER, THE LOOKOUT and MICHAEL CLAYTON. All exceptional films, esp. CLAYTON which I would rank as one of THE best films of the decade.

  3. I picked a hell of a year to really get into cinema. No other year this decade came close to the pure quality of so many of the movies (though, oddly, if you sift through the overwhelming detritus of this year, what you're left with is a pocket of some truly great flicks).

    1. No Country for Old Men (very nearly my pick for film of the decade, but I had to put Yi Yi above it)
    2. There Will Be Blood
    3. Zodiac
    4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
    5. Juno
    6. Gone Baby Gone
    7. Once
    8. Grindhouse
    9. Ratatouille
    10. Eastern Promises
    11. Inland Empire
    12. Into the Wild
    13. Michael Clayton
    14. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
    15. The Bourne Ultimatum
    16. Control
    17. Enchanted
    18. Hot Fuzz
    19. Rescue Dawn
    20. This is England

Jesus Christ, I can actually keep going. And I'm having a hard time differentiating in quality ranking the ones I did list. Man what a great year. I think, looking at all these now, that I subconsciously left some off these off my decade list just to give other years a shot.

  4. This was definitely the year. Nice to see some love for BUG, which first made me take notice of the great Michael Shannon.

    5. 3 :10 to Yuma (James Mangold)

  6. Great lists, everyone! Keep 'em coming.

    A few quick thoughts:

It seems like everyone is in agreement here that this is the best year of the decade.

Tony: I'm glad you love Bug, too. It's a great, sneaky horror film that gets under your skin (no pun intended). And yes, this was the film that introduced me to Michael Shannon as well.

J.D.: I actually think that 28 Weeks Later is better than the first one because it has a bit more emotion running through it. The subway scene in the dark rivals the rampage in the mansion at the end of 28 Days Later.

Jake: Love your list. It's true...with this year we all could probably list about 30 films on our list.

  7. Kevin J. Olson: I'm totally on the same page with you re: 28 WEEKS LATER being better than the first film. The opening action sequence out in the country ending with an insanely intense foot chase to a boat has to be one of the most nerve-wracking sequences I've seen for some time.

  8. Great list and how tremendous to see ZODIAC at number one.

  9. J.D.:

I agree with you about the opening scene. It's the one that sticks with me the most. I am in the process of reading your piece on Miami Vice...I will comment on it tonight.

  10. Jeremy:

Thanks for stopping by. Always great to see you around these parts. Zodiac is not only my favorite movie of 2007, but it's also one of my five favorites of the decade. The way Fincher used CGI was just phenomenal.

  11. I'm late coming to this one, but here would be my rankings for this great year of cinema:

    1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
    2. Zodiac
    3. There Will Be Blood
    4. Eastern Promises
    5. No Country for Old Men
    6. The Counterfeiters
    7. Gone Baby Gone
    8. Atonement
    9. Juno
    10. Michael Clayton

The Assassination of Jesse James and Zodiac are both Top 5 of the entire decade for me.

  12. Dave:

Thanks for stopping by and supplying that great list. I obviously agree with your assessment that Zodiac is one of the best films of the decade. I stupidly thought that The Assassination of Jesse James... was a 2008 movie, so I didn't think of putting it on here, but I would definitely place it in my top 10. Also nice to see some love for Gone Baby Gone...a movie that I think has only gotten with each viewing.

Thanks again for chiming in with your list. Great to have ya here in the comments.
