Wow, is it a nice hidden gem. It's definitely one of the better slashers out there-- and this is a slashers slasher-- teens in the woods. The fisting ending is so bizarre, and coupled with that characters earlier comments (that border on insightful modern feminism), then putting on makeup right before, makes for an interesting 'act' to consider. Looking her up on imdb reveals this was pretty much her career, a shame. A damn shame (how's that for a SEINFELD reference after your 'gold, Jerry, gold')!

Anyway thanks for the great recommendation. I'll also be taking a look at some Fulci giallo and I think I'm going to brave (gulp) 90's Argento.

I'm not going to limit myself to slasher films, though (the title for the series was more of a need for semi-alliteration than any kind of pigeonholing theme) as I plan on taking a look at the Blind Dead series (thanks to your reviews last year) and some Mexican horror like Cemetery of Terror (starring Hugo Stiglitz!) and some Australian horror (which after seeing Not Quite Hollywood I'm probably more excited than I should be for those).

Thanks for checking this out. The Final Girl is given a primarily masculine position in that final shot. I too think that if we were to follow that character past that moment we would find her rather insane. I love how she even makes the same noises as the killers do when she's sticking her fist down that dudes throat. Creepy.

Thanks also for pointing out the wonderful musical score. The composer did a great, minimalist job evoking fear and dread through the odd and displacing musical score...some of which sounded like they were using the same rescue whistle that the characters use in the film.

Finally, I agree with you again on that death scene of the red head. Damn was that creepy.

Thanks again, Lee, for stopping by!Kevin J. They provide all of the staples of the genre, but go somewhere a bit smarter with them; they made the most out of what they had to work with. I like how the typical strong male character is reduced to a sobbing coward and the final girl essentially takes over his role in the end. Final girls were nothing new at this point, but they take it to a slightly higher level here. She pretty much skull fucks the remaining killer with her forearm, while her boyfriend is left emasculated. It seems pretty obvious that if she didn't end up in a nut house afterward, at the very least she could never have a relationship with him again. Also, the death of the redhead Megan (Jamie Rose) was very brutal and disturbing in what was implied. Just what did those two retarded monsters do to her? The scene is designed to make the mind of every individual watching conclude the absolute worst they can come up with.Lee Russellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01611679296214391643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-37528640358114287782010-05-17T21:58:04.947-07:002010-05-17T21:58:04.947-07:00Thanks, Mike. Like any good grindhouse horror film from the early 80's, Just Before Dawn has a lot of padding in it. But once you slog through the bad, the good is REALLY good for a horror film of its ilk.Kevin J.
