And I'll give you my reasons, based on your article: firstly, it's not like the classical horror, secondly, it's a sequel of a movie I really enjoyed and thirdly, I really am curious to see if it's really going to be a disappointment.ioanahttp://anynaseo.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-19389858653220078822010-03-22T14:59:33.962-07:002010-03-22T14:59:33.962-07:00Bill:

I'm with ya on how sad it is that the horror genre is a "degraded" one, as you put it. Out of curiosity have you heard anything about The Descent 2? The last rumor I heard was that it's coming straight to DVD. What a shame. I know it's not going to be anything great, but that's one I wouldn't mind seeing in the theater.

Oh, and the great ambiguous Swedish vampire film, Let the Right One In has been repackaged for American audiences as Let Me In directed by the guy that did Cloverfield. Sweet Jesus... degraded genre indeed!Kevin J. Olsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17275402809912728035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-80669427149585668622010-03-22T13:41:24.028-07:002010-03-22T13:41:24.028-07:00Well, you liked this more than I did, Kevin, and y...Well, you liked this more than I did, Kevin, and you didn't even like it. But I will acknowledge that Zombie provides a few moments, which is maybe why I end up disliking his movies so much more than, perhaps, they deserve: there is a grain of potential there, and he doesn't even realize it, and his acolytes don't care.

That sounded snobby, but oh well. Horror is a degraded genre. I should just accept it. Even my own horror viewing habits are becoming degarded.

Two quick things:

1) You're right, Dourif WAS great. Maybe if Zombie gives him a starring role next time, something positive might happen.

2) I also sort of liked the white horse/dead mom imagery -- it didn't always land, but it worked often enough to justify the bizarre choice -- but where the fuck was it in the Zombie's first HALLOWEEN movie? Talk about an inconsistency -- if this is some sort of central visual metaphor for psychotic rampages that can be passed from one warped mind to his sister (because it's a hereditary metaphor or something) then why didn't Michael ever see it before?

Oh, and I watched the director's cut. A lot of critics who liked the film made it very clear that was the way to go, because it was an infinitely better film. I haven't seen the other cut, and I honestly can't imagine it really matters too much, but there it is, for what it's worth.bill r.https://www.blogger.com/profile/17748572205731857892noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-23132338273075661432010-03-22T11:30:49.181-07:002010-03-22T11:30:49.181-07:00J.D.:

I actually like THE DEVIL'S REJECTS despite the problems it had and despite its veering into torture porn for the sheer ability of Zombie to create horrific moments that truly feel terrifying. Not many people accomplish that the way he does.

But taking what you and other have written about these remakes, it seems apparent that Zombie has all the tools to make great horror films, but somewhat bungles it up in the end.

It's also likely that no matter what, he was going to fail with the HALLOWEEN films. He probably would have been better off if he made these films without them being remakes for his foray into the slasher genre, as going at the genre from a psychological aspect is too rarely explored.Troy Olsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14843741571724231174noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-67950674916672857142010-03-21T11:31:35.092-07:002010-03-21T11:31:35.092-07:00Mike:

Yeah, the film's narrative is something of a mess, but I give Zombie points for at least trying something new. The images of his mother and the young Michael actually come off quite strong at the end...making an eerie effect in film's final moment in the shed.Kevin J. I also didn't buy the whole psychological thing with the images of the mothers and the twist end just lost it for me. I haven't seen the finished product but your review basically complies with everything I said of the script in my coverage. I like it when that happens ;)

Good review. The Taxi Driverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04352371911592068643noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-57695590018083722072010-03-21T10:51:44.557-07:002010-03-21T10:51:44.557-07:00Nice write up, you really nailed what makes this m...Nice write up, you really nailed what makes this movie such a bitch to watch, a little bit better and it'd be a near classic.

I'm curious though did you watch The Director's or the Theatrical Cut? Its one of the oddest DC's I've ever seen since it literally just takes every problem the original cut has and makes it worse.Bryce Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17040954580033470664noreply@blogger.com
