I reviewed it a while ago:

http://filmconnoisseur.blogspot.com/2010/01/lair-of-white-worm-1988.html

He also made another horror film called GOTHIC which is all kinds of weird and awesome as well:

http://filmconnoisseur.blogspot.com/2010/01/gothic-1986.html

Both films have Russell's weirdness, but Lair has an unexpected level of comedy to it. Gothic is a descent into madness though...highly recommend both of em.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-81123732990890471272011-01-27T14:22:15.963-08:002011-01-27T14:22:15.963-08:00TFC:

One thing I love about Russell: no matter how ridiculous his movies may be, they're never uninteresting.Kevin J. Well, at least its one of the most polished efforts. Still, with a budget and great actors, this Russell film manages to maintain the traditional Russell vibe, its hallucinatory images and religious imagery!

Love it, I too wish he had produced more sci-fi films! Aside from that, I love the themes this one plays with, it gets very existential, very cerebral.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8785859730868628316.post-77930247788221824132011-01-23T17:02:06.722-08:002011-01-23T17:02:06.722-08:00John W. I forgot to mention in my review that DP (Jordan Cronenweth) also shot BLADE RUNNER, and that his son shot THE SOCIAL NETWORK (not to mention other Fincher films, FIGHT CLUB and SEVEN). Cronenweth and Russell's imagery definitely stays with you, and I can see why it had such an impression on you.

As for other Russell films, I would go with THE DEVILS and then something like TOMMY. If you want to get really crazy, try out MAHLER which I think is the best of his composer biopics.Kevin J. I referenced this film not long ago in a post on Avatar and shamanism, with shamanism also playing a part in Altered States.

http://www.theofantastique.com/2010/04/27/avatar-psychedelics-and-shamanism/John W.
